After a woman wakes up from a two-year coma, she identifies her brother as the perpetrator

West Virginia State Police said a woman who was in a coma for two years came out and told her her brother had attacked her.

Wanda Palmer, 51, said her brother attacked her at their home near Cotageville, West Virginia, in June 2020. According to a statement released on the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, police said Palmer was the victim of “assaults, hacking and left to die.”

According to the police, they discovered Palmer on her sofa in a “upright position” with significant injuries that seemed to have been caused by a hatchet or an axe. According to the Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger, who spoke to CNN about the incident, the responding officers initially believed that she had passed away but soon found that she was still alive despite her faint breathing.

Mellinger stated that the weapon was never found by the police.

Mellinger added that a witness stated that they saw Palmer’s brother Daniel on her porch around midnight the night before she was found. This was the night before she was discovered. The sheriff stated that there were no phone records, surveillance footage, or eyewitnesses that were located outside of Palmer’s residence.

The police looked into numerous different people but were unable to lay any charges against anyone. Mellinger stated that a couple of weeks ago, his office received a call from the care facility where Palmer was staying stating that she was able to communicate with the authorities.

Mellinger told CNN that Palmer was only able to respond affirmatively or negatively to questions, but that her testimony was sufficient for the police to make an arrest.

According to the arrest papers that CNN was able to acquire, Daniel Palmer III, age 55, was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder as well as malicious wounding on Friday.

According to the Jackson County sheriff, he was arraigned and given a bond of $500,000; however, the sheriff stated that it is unknown how he pleaded to the charges against him. CNN was unable to locate an attorney who could represent him, so the network has contacted the Jackson County Public Defender’s office instead.

According to CNN, the sheriff of Jackson County said Wanda Palmer is now coherent but unable to carry lengthy discussions due to her condition.
