The story of a stray dog and seven dogs rescued by National Guard soldiers is very moving.
It all started when Sheba, the mother, migrated to the troop base in Afghanistan and quickly became a popular friend and mascot of the soldiers. She valiantly pursued other male strays while on patrol.
After Sheba gave birth to a lot of puppies, she got very tired. Soldiers took care of their health with army rations and food sent home by relatives. As the pups grew up, the soldiers approached the dogs. “You really have become part of the family for us,” said Lieutenant Joseph Lapenta.
The soldiers’ hearts splintered upon learning that their base would be closed and that they might have to leave the dogs behind.
That was when Sgt. Kaba knew he couldn’t leave Afghanistan without taking the dogs with him. The puppy rescue was underway and an amazing journey for Sheba and her pups was imminent.
