An unusual zebra was seen in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya where photographers Rahul Sachdev and Anthony Terra, who is also a tour guide, took some photos of it.

This was the first such case of a spotted zebra in the Mara reservation, Parmal Liman, a wildlife specialist at Matera Bush Camp, told the Daily Nation. A zebra baby is most likely to have melanosis, which is the opposite of albinism. He did have some sad news, however: no similar zebra has survived such a condition in African gardens in the past six months.

According to some scientists, crosswalks form when melanin production is inhibited, which means that the animal is often black with white stripes, rather than the other way around.

But the crosswalks aren’t just for show. Live Science argues that they help animals stay cool in the African heat. There are also theories that stripes help zebras hide from potential predators, and they also help them avoid being bitten by flies known to transmit diseases.
