In 2012, 14-year-old Daisy Coleman told her unimaginable story. She said she was sexually assaulted at a house party, although the accused teen said it was consensual. The charges against Matthew Barnett were dropped and then reduced, and Daisy was the victim of brutal bullying by her classmates and parishioners who refused to believe her story.
The bullying got so intense that Coleman had to move to another city.
In 2016, Daisy received international support when she became the subject of a documentary entitled “Audrie & Daisy” which was released on Netflix.
Daisy became a sexual assault lawyer and nanny. She co-founded SafeBAE, a sexual assault prevention organization.
Daisy died of suicide at the age of 23. No one was more affected than her grieving mother, Melinda. Melinda wrote on social media, “There’s not enough love for you, I could have said as I carried your cold, broken body.” “I carried you as a baby anyway, my child. The baby I carried when I was first born. It has always been my greatest honor and happiness to be your mother and best friend. Mama Bear ! ”
Four months after Daisy’s death, Melinda died of suicide.
